The Story Behind the Photographs
Welcome
I’m a photographer based in Bairnsdale, East Gippsland, Victoria, where I spend much of my time photographing the landscapes, wildlife and places around me.
My photography is largely about looking closely at the familiar — birds, animals, rural landscapes, old machinery, changing weather and the small details that can easily go unnoticed. I’m interested in photographs that convey something of a place or moment rather than simply documenting it.
This blog is where I’ll share the stories behind some of my photographs, the places where they were taken, what I’ve learned along the way, and occasionally the thoughts and ideas that have shaped the way I photograph.
The photographs on this site are for anyone who enjoys wildlife, landscapes and the Australian countryside, but also for those who appreciate the idea that a good photograph doesn't necessarily have to be technically perfect. Sometimes it just has to make you stop and look.

A Bridge I’d Crossed Hundreds of Times
I’ve run and cycled across the Nicholson River railway bridge hundreds of times. In April I finally walked underneath it with the 1100D.
A Storm, a Newspaper and a Moto g8 Plus
The opening image on my homepage wasn't taken with a camera. It was five frames in seven seconds on a Moto g8 plus, from the driver's seat of my car.
The Glenaladale Weir: Four Visits, Three Cameras
Four visits to the Glenaladale Weir on the Mitchell River, with a 2003 Olympus, a phone and a Canon 1100D. The river looked different every time, and one visit cost me a filter.
St Mary's After Dark
Thousands of people photograph St Mary's in Bairnsdale every year, usually in about thirty seconds. Hardly anyone sees it at 4am, when the lights set into the ground take over from the sun.
Morning Mist & Golden Light on the Rail Trail
At 4:30am, freezing fog, and no bike light, I turned onto a stretch of the East Gippsland Rail Trail I've ridden a thousand times — and saw light through the trees I'd never seen before.
